CLASSES
FOR THE WHOLE OHANA!
At HĀLAU MAKANA, we teach dances from across the many islands of Polynesia, from Hawai'i to Tahiti to Aeotearoa (New Zealand).
We offer classes for students of all ages, all genders, and all levels of experience. We welcome beginners to advanced dancers and competitors.

Hula Classes
FROM THE ISLANDS OF HAWAI'I


Beginner Keiki Hula
10 years old and below
Students will learn the basic steps of Hula and some 'Ōlelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian language). Students will receive an introduction to protocol and history through movement and music of Hawai’i.

Advanced Keiki Hula
10 years old and below; experience required
Students should have a thorough knowledge of cultural protocol and can execute specific basic Hula steps and gestures. Students in the this class dive deeper into cultural concepts, history, and language. Difficult choreography is to be expected at this level.
For students who have completed the beginners course and/or have gone through the audition process for advancement.

Beginner Adult Hula
11 years old and above
Students will learn the basic steps of Hula and some 'Ōlelo Hawai'i (Hawaiian language). Students will receive an introduction to protocol and history through movement and music of Hawai’i.

Advanced Kūpuna Hula
Experience required
Our Kūpuna Hula class is a soft-paced, low-intensity dance class where men and women can exercise their bodies and enjoy beautiful melodies of Hawai’i. Every other month Kūpuna Hula students will review class protocol, basic steps, and language, as well as learn new choreography.



'Ori Classes
FROM THE ISLAND OF TAHITI

Beginner Tamari'i 'Ori
10 years old and below
Students will learn the basic steps and words of 'Ori Tahiti and the Reo Tahiti (language), plus get exposure to the world of recreational and competitive 'Ori Tahiti through mini projects, performances, and in-house competitions.

Advanced Tamari'i 'Ori
10 years old and below; experience required
Students will build upon their knowledge of 'Ori Tahiti and Reo Tahiti and learn more complex choreography.
For students who have completed the beginners course and/or have gone through the audition process for advancement.

Beginner Adult 'Ori
11 years old and above
Students will learn the basic steps and words of 'Ori Tahiti and the Reo Tahiti (language), plus get exposure to the world of recreational and competitive 'Ori Tahiti through mini projects, performances, and in-house competitions.

Advanced Adult 'Ori
11 years old and above; experience required
Students will learn more complex 'Ori Tahiti steps, language, pehe (drum beats), and cultural history. They will dive deeper into cultural concepts and more rigorous and complex choreography at a high-intensity, fast-paced setting.
For students who have completed the beginners course and/or have gone through the audition process for advancement.

'Ori Solo Training
All ages; experience required
This is a high-energy, fast-paced class that will focus on 3 fundamental aspects of competitive 'Ori Tahiti: strength, stamina, and freestyle dancing.
This class is not exclusive to dancers who compete but does require experience.
